Alabama Rot – is it in the area?

Tuesday, January 19, 2016

There are no reported cases of Alabama Rot in the area so far

There have been many reports of Alabama rot in the news recently, with confirmed cases as near as North Wiltshire. However, we would like to reassure you that we haven’t treated any suspected cases in Bristol or Bath and North East Somerset, nor have we heard of any potential threat recently.

Only one suspected case treated at Highcroft in 2014

The only patient we have treated was an unconfirmed case back in April 2014 which showed similar symptoms to that of Alabama rot. This case was referred to us from another practice outside of the area, who thankfully made a full recovery.

Of course we cannot guarantee that your pet is not at risk of contracting the disease, therefore if you notice the following symptoms, please seek veterinary attention immediately.

Symptoms of Alabama Rot

·         Skin lesions on the feet and/or legs (usually between hocks and carpus)

·         Vomiting

·         Diarrhoea

·         Lack of appetite

·         Lethargy

Alabama rot is thought to be contracted in woodland areas, as it was originally confined to the New Forest area, and has only been reported to affect dogs. It is a fast-acting disease, therefore we urge you to be vigilant with recognising the symptoms.

Contact your vet immediately if you see signs of Alabama Rot

If you have any further concerns about Alabama Rot, please contact your local surgery or Highcroft Veterinary Hospital on 01275 832 410.
