Furry friends to the rescue!

Tuesday, September 02, 2014

A group of brave veterinary nurses, surgeons and receptionists signed up to take part in the Jessie May Newfoundland Dog Rescue Day, which raises money for terminally ill children in the area.

The nine ‘Highcrofters’ took part in a day of water rescues at Portishead Marina on Saturday 6th September, where they jumped into the water to be pulled aboard by a trained Newfoundland rescue dog.

Highcroft Marketing Assistant, Gill Tooze said, “We are so pleased to have sponsored and taken part in the Jessie May Newfoundland Dog Rescue Day.  We had a team take part in last year’s event and they absolutely loved it.  The dogs are fantastic and it’s a fab experience for both those involved or just watching from the marina.

“We hope to raise at least £900 for Jessie May, which does such incredible work with poorly children and their families in Bristol.  It’s a great cause and one we’re proud to support.”

The Jessie May Trust cares for children with terminal illnesses within their own homes in Bristol and surrounding areas.  It costs around £820,000 a year to provide this care and as the charity is almost entirely dependent on public support, fundraising opportunities like this are essential.

Julian Withers, from Jessie May, said: “This is one of our most exciting fundraisers and we were so pleased to have worked with Newfound Friends again this year.  We have put this event on once before and it was such a fantastic day for everyone involved that we just had to do it again!

“A real-life water rescue is something most people won’t experience in their lifetime so this is an amazing opportunity to see what these incredible dogs can do, raise some money for a great cause and experience the thrill of a rescue first hand.  I’d like to say a huge thanks to the team from Highcroft who both sponsored the event and took part.  Their support means an awful lot to the families we care for.”
