How to brush your dog's teeth

Wednesday, May 04, 2016

Brushing your pet's teeth can be a daunting prospect if you don't know how to do it.

Watch Laurie and her dog Cooper show you how simple it can be:

Step by step guide to brushing your dog's teeth

1. Encourage your dog to tolerate their mouth being handled by lifting their lips and stroking their face

2. Offer your dog a small amount of pet toothpaste on your finger to lick off.

3. Do this for as long as you feel necessary to build up confidence

4. Start with your finger or a cloth to gently massage some toothpaste onto your dog’s teeth and gums in a circular motion. The side teeth may be more manageable to begin with.

5. Remember to reward your dog with fuss throughout

6. When you feel your dog is ready, you can progress towards the back teeth

7. Once your dog is comfortable with this, you can try to introduce a soft pet toothbrush or finger brush instead

8. If your dog will tolerate it, try to brush the inside of their teeth (tongue side) and the biting surface (where they chew)

What you will need:

  • Your finger or a clean cloth
  • Finger toothbrush or pet toothbrush
  • Pet toothpaste (do not use human toothpaste)
  • Treats as rewards
  • A little bit of patience

Try to brush your dog’s teeth at least four times a week
