It's tick season again

Tuesday, June 07, 2016

Once again we would like to remind dog owners to protect your pets from ticks. The recent humid weather is an ideal breeding ground for these nasty critters and, with tick-borne diseases, like Lyme Disease, thought to be on the increase, we urge you to consider tick protection.

If your dog walks in pasture, woodland or long grass - urban or not - make sure you are using a flea protection that covers ticks. Ticks wait in the grass for warm-blooded mammals to brush past, then attach themselves and feed off the blood. The longer the tick is attached, the greater the risk of infection, so check your pet's skin regularly.

If you find a tick, call your surgery for an appointment to see a nurse who will remove it for you free of charge. Alternatively you can use a special tick remover (available from your surgery) but make sure the whole tick is out, including the head, otherwise your pet may get a nasty skin reaction and the tick could still pass on the disease. Approximately 1 in 200 ticks carry Lyme Disease*, a disease which is difficult to diagnose and treat and which can be very debilitating for the recipient.

For more information, or to book an appointment to see the nurse, please call your surgery.
