Should you call the vet if your pet has been sick?

Tuesday, February 16, 2016

Animals can’t tell us when they are feeling unwell, so it can often be alarming when your cat or dog suddenly vomits.

Why would your pet be sick?

There could be many reasons why your pet has started to vomit including:

  • Scavenging (they’ve eaten something that doesn’t agree with them)
  • Foreign body or obstruction
  • Parasites
  • Infection
  • They’ve ingested something toxic (plants, chocolate, antifreeze etc)
  • Underlying disease or medical condition (e.g. pancreatitis, irritable bowel disease, cancer)

Should you visit the vet if your pet is being sick?

We would always recommend calling us to speak to a veterinary nurse for advice first, so either contact your local surgery or Highcroft Veterinary Hospital for some free advice.

In most cases a visit to the vets won’t be necessary however if you notice any of the following symptoms we would recommend you book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • Frequent vomiting over a short period of time (acute)
  • Being sick on a regular basis over a longer period of time (chronic)
  • Blood or foreign material in the vomit
  • Your pet is lethargic, depressed, bloated or painful
  • You’ve noticed them eat something they shouldn’t have

If you are at all worried, please always give your local surgery a call – it’s always better to be safe than sorry!
