Dennis the Pac-Man Frog undergoes surgery

Friday, October 02, 2015

‘Why are frogs so happy? They eat whatever bugs them.’

We have the pleasure to introduce Dennis, an impressive one and a half year old Ornate Horned Frog. These frogs are also known as Pac-Man Frogs (as in the Pac-Man computer game) due to their wide mouths and tendency to eat anything in front of them.

Dennis came in to see exotics vet, Sonya Miles, due to feeling rather fed up and bloated. His owner also reported that he had been unable to go to the toilet for quite a long time. Unfortunately, it seemed that Dennis had been putting the Pac-Man theory to the test and had bitten off more than he could chew. Or in this case, digest.

After taking some rather remarkable x-rays, Sonya suspected an intestinal blockage and admitted Dennis to our Hospital for impaction surgery. During the careful surgical procedure she removed 20 grams of packed material – that was 10% of his body weight! Most of the material removed was actually his bedding.

We are pleased to report that Dennis is recovering well since his operation, has been eating small insects and has been hopping around quite happily ever since. Let’s hope he sticks to bugs from now on!
