Alabama Rot

Thursday, December 31, 2015

You may have noticed that there has been a lot of focus on the mysterious disease ‘Alabama Rot’ in the news again over the past few days. This rare disease affecting dogs causes painful skin sores on the feet and can eventually lead to kidney failure.

Originally confined to areas of the New Forest, there have since been reports of over 100 suspected cases from across the UK, affecting a variety of dog breeds – unlike in the USA which has only affected Greyhounds.

Symptoms of Alabama Rot can include:

·         Skin lesions on the feet/legs (usually between hocks and carpus)

·         Vomiting

·         Diarrhoea

·         Lack of appetite

·         Lethargy

Thankfully, as a large veterinary group, we have only treated one suspected case of Alabama Rot in April 2014, which we are pleased to report recovered well from the condition. We have not seen any other cases since nor have we heard of other reports in the immediate area.

If you notice that your dog has developed multiple unexplained wounds on their legs, please seek veterinary attention straight away. However, please do not panic as we expect the vast majority of wounds will not be a result of this rare condition.

Please feel free to contact us if you would like further information about the risk of Alabama Rot.
