How to brush your cat's teeth

Monday, October 03, 2016

What you will need

  • A clean cloth
  • Finger toothbrush or pet toothbrush
  • Pet toothpaste (never use human toothpaste)
  • Treats as rewards
  • A little bit of patience
  • Your cat!

Step by step guide to brushing your cat's teeth

 1. Place you cat on your lap with their hindquarters facing your body. Place your arms either side of your cat to hold them in place.

 2. Encourage your cat to tolerate their mouth being handled by lifting their lips and stroking their face.

 3. Place a small amount of pet toothpaste on their paw or lips to lick off.

 4. Do this for as long as you feel necessary to build up confidence.

5. Start with your finger or a cloth to gently massage some toothpaste onto your cat’s teeth and gums in a circular motion. The side teeth may be more manageable to begin with.

6. Remember to reward your cat with fuss or treats throughout.

7. When you feel your cat is ready, you can progress towards the rest of the teeth.

8. Once your cat is comfortable with this, you can try to introduce a pet toothbrush or finger brush instead.

Gums may bleed slightly when you first begin a brushing routine; this shouldn’t be anything to worry about and will subside after a few days. If bleeding continues for more than three days, contact your vet for advice.

Other home care techniques

Some cats just simply will not tolerate brushing; in these cases, there are still ways in which you can help prevent plaque and tartar build up:

  • Your vet may suggest a special 'dental diet' for your cat. These diets have been specially designed to help control plaque and tartar.
  • Purchase a chlorhexidine adhesive dental paste. These pastes will break down the plaque and tartar without the need for brushing. Simply rub the paste onto your cat’s teeth and leave in place. Bear in mind that long term use can result in tooth discolouration.

Don’t forget your pet can have FREE dental health check-ups at your local surgery. Call now to book an appointment.
