Don't wait until you need to call the Fire Brigade

Monday, June 22, 2015

The old way of practising veterinary medicine was for the vet to wait for the call about a sick pet and then, just like a fire-fighting hero, charge to the rescue and try to help “put out the fire”. Nowadays, we would much rather work with you to stop the fire from starting in the first place and keep your pet healthy instead. The old saying ‘prevention is better than cure’ is never far from a vet’s lips.

It is well recognised that most of the diseases we see in pets are closely related to the species, breed and/or age of the pet. We can often predict which pets are most likely to suffer from particular conditions and when they are most at risk of developing these problems.

For instance, breeds such as Maine Coon cats, Dobermanns and French Bulldogs can suffer from particular heart conditions and at particular ages. Certain dog breeds like Labradors and German Shepherds have a hereditary tendency to develop hip dysplasia. If conditions like these are picked up early, there are often effective and relatively simple treatments that can prevent these problems from developing, therefore reducing the need for major surgery or lifelong medication later in life.

Because of the many health issues affecting popular companion animals, we will be contacting our clients who own pets that could develop these issues. Hopefully then, we will be able to catch or prevent these problems from occurring before it is too late (much like you would receive a screening invitation from the NHS for certain medical conditions). By using your pet’s details smartly we can make sure that you don’t get any information that isn’t relevant to you and your pets - we all know how irritating that can be.

Do get involved too! Let us know if you think of something we should be highlighting to fellow owners of your pet’s breed. Simply pop your ideas in an email and send it to enquiries@highcroftvet.co.uk. Alternatively, get in touch with us via our Facebook or Twitterpage. We’d love to hear from you.
