60,000 pets have been lost to electrical fires

Wednesday, November 11, 2015

UK charity, Electrical Safety First, has launched a campaign to raise awareness of electrical fires and the risk they pose to unattended pets.

Electrical fires can occur from something as simple as leaving your mobile phone on charge or leaving the dishwasher on overnight.

Research by the charity has found that approximately 60,000 people in the UK have lost their pets in electrical fires.

Electrical Safety First has put together a list of simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of electrical fires:

Make sure that plugs, sockets, cables and lights do not have any sign of burn marks.
Do not overload plug sockets as this will cause them to overheat.
Do not leave anything flammable on top of a microwave or near a fuse box.
Do not leave mobile phones, tablets, laptops on charge and forget about them.
Do not leave dishwashers or washing machines to run whilst you are asleep or out of the house.
Make sure that portable heaters are not left unattended or around pets.
Make sure cables and wires are tidied away so that pets are not tempted to chew through them.

Below is a video Electrical Safety First have created to highlight just what your pets could get up to when they are home alone. It certainly makes you think!
