Update - Leptospirosis still a concern

Tuesday, March 03, 2015

In early January we issued a warning to all dog owners about a local outbreak of leptospirosis, which caused quite a stir as you can imagine. Although the press and social media warnings have now died down, we would like to remind you that the problem has not yet disappeared!

Leptospirosis is in the area and spreading further

Specialists at our Whitchurch Hospital are still treating cases that have tested positive for leptospirosis on nearly a weekly basis, with the patient count now at over 50 since December 2014. We would like to remind you of the symptoms of leptospirosis and to avoid high risk areas if your pet has not yet been vaccinated against it.

Symptoms of leptospirosis

High risk areas

  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Jaundice
  • High temperature
  • Increased drinking

  • Areas of stagnant or slow moving water
  • Farm land
  • Stable yards
  • Areas frequented by lots of wildlife or rats

If your pet has been affected by any the above symptoms then please seek veterinary attention as soon as possible.

Leading the way in the treatment of leptospirosis

Catherine Bovens, our resident ‘lepto expert’ has been busy teaching other vets from around the country about the disease and has even launched a new clinical study testing dogs to see if they are carriers for the disease.

The study involves collecting a urine sample from healthy dogs that have NOT yet received the L4 leptospirosis vaccination. The urine test is completely free of charge to dog owners. If you would like to contribute to the study or just to have some peace of mind, please collect a urine sample pot and questionnaire from ourReceptionists. In doing so, your dog could even save a life!
