Babesiosis outbreak – protect your dog against ticks

There has been a lot of interest in the news recently about Babesiosis, a disease that is spread by ticks.

So far we have had NO reported cases in the area, however it has been found in a localised area in Essex where approximately 4 dogs have been diagnosed.

The disease had not previously been found in dogs in the UK, but has been known throughout Europe over the years.

However, as it is a tick-borne disease there is the potential that it could spread further throughout the country.

The symptoms of babesiosis in dogs include weakness, lethargy, pale gums, red urine and fever. Please seek veterinary attention as soon as possible if you notice that your pet is unwell. Babesiosis is very rarely diagnosed in cats however it is still important to safely remove ticks from them too.

The best way to avoid contracting babesiosis is to protect your dog against ticks. As the disease can be transmitted very quickly, we recommend using a fast-acting tick product.

If you would like some advice about tick treatments or need help removing a tick from your pet, please call your nearest surgery now.
