Free Leptospirosis Testing

As you may already be aware, specialist vet, Catherine Bovens, is currently testing Highcroft dogs to see if they are carriers for leptospirosis. This ground-breaking research is to see how many of our dogs are unknowingly spreading the disease around the local area.

What is a carrier?

A carrier of leptospirosis is when a dog is infected with the leptospirosis bacteria but does not show any symptoms of ill health. However, they will continue to spread the bacteria through their urine, meaning other dogs could catch it and become unwell.

How are the dogs tested?

The test is completely non-invasive; all it involves is testing a urine sample from your dog to see if it contains evidence of the leptospirosis bacteria. Simply collect a urine sample pot and a history questionnaire from a member of the Reception team.

Can my dog be tested?

The test is available to Highcroft clients ONLY if their dog meets the following criteria:

  • Your dog has been registered at a Highcroft surgery for 1 year or more
  • Your dog has not yet received the L4 leptospirosis vaccination (these were put in place as of 29th December 2014)
  • Your dog is healthy
  • Please note that this test is not available to clients of Silva House Veterinary Centre, Frome Veterinary Centre or Haycombe Veterinary Centre. This is due to a difference in the original vaccines used previously at Silva House Veterinary Group.

How much will the test cost?

The test is completely free of charge for all eligible dogs.

If you would like any more information regarding the test, please do not hesitate to contact your local surgery. If you would like to know more about the threat of leptospirosis in the area please read our Frequently Asked Questions.
