Looking after your new pet

Before you bring your new pet home, make sure you have everything you need in place.

The breeder, pet shop or whoever you are getting your pet from should be able to tell you in advance what you will need.

They will also be able to tell you whether your new pet has had any vaccinations and what food they are used to. (If you intend to change their diet it is very important to do so gradually to avoid stomach upsets).

For example, rabbits and small furries will need a hutch or a cage, a drinking bowl or bottle, suitable food, a run or exercise area, suitable bedding, etc.

Dogs will need a comfortable bed to relax on, and a supply of the food that they have been used to (to avoid diarrhoea). Similarly, cats will need to have a comfortable bed, a supply of food they are used to and a litter tray as they need to stay indoors initially (for up to 4 weeks) whilst they get used to their surroundings.

Reptiles, birds and amphibians will have precise requirements, and can suffer greatly if they are not kept in the right conditions and fed the correct food. It is always worth buying a book and reading up on the species that you are getting before you bring them home.

The next thing to do is contact us to arrange to bring your new pet in for a free health check and advice on feeding, vaccinations, parasite control, training, etc.
