Veterinary surgeons

Our team of veterinary surgeons includes some of the most highly qualified in the country with Specialists, Diplomates, Certificate holders, GP Certificates and more.  All Highcroft vets have areas of special interest to which they devote much of their continuing professional development training. As a result, we can treat most conditions that might otherwise require outside referral.

Clinical Director - Bath and Somerset branches

Lisa graduated as a veterinary surgeon from the Royal Veterinary College in 2010 and joined Highcroft in July 2012. After spending some time in our main Whitchurch Hospital and Weston Village Vets, Lisa is now based at our Silva House Veterinary Centre in Midsomer Norton. She has also been promoted to be Clinical Director for our branches in Midsomer Norton, Frome, Haycombe, Weston Village and Batheaston.

Lisa has a particular interest in surgery and performs the keyhole surgery techniques at Midsomer Norton.

Lisa has a dog called Manny, who she 'attempts' agility with. She also has a cat called Will.i.am, who keeps everyone, especially Manny, in check.

Ciara joined Longwell Green Veterinary Centre in February 2013 as a veterinary surgeon having qualified from Nottingham University in 2011. She previously gained a veterinary nursing and practical administration degree from Bristol University.  Ciara has a special interest in medicine, surgery and imaging (ultrasound and x-ray) and when she's not at the surgery she likes to go skiing whenever possible. Ciara is now Clinical Director for our branches in Longwell Green, Keynsham, Stockwood and Brislington.

Nic qualified from Bristol University in June 2012 and joined Highcroft as a night vet in February 2014.

In 2016, Nic transferred to 'day work' and took on the role of Head Vet at our Veterinary Hospital in Whitchurch. He has recently been promoted to become Clinical Director of the first opinion general veterinary service at Highcroft Veterinary Hospital.

Sarah joined Highcroft as a Veterinary Surgeon in March 2015 having qualified in 2006 from the Royal Veterinary College, London. She is based at our Longwell Green Veterinary Centre. Sarah has a special interest in rabbit medicine and has three rabbits, Sooty, Sweep and Florence, as well as two tortoises, Toby and Grace.

When not at work Sarah enjoys walking and going to the theatre and concerts.

Annalisa joined Highcroft in July 2015 having qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon, from Universita Degli Studi Di Torino, Italy, in 2013. Annalisa works at Silva House Veterinary Centre and Highcroft Veterinary Hospital and has a special interest in medicine. When not at Highcroft she enjoys travelling, art, photography and reading.

Jessica qualified from Liverpool University in 2014 and joined Highcroft in October 2016. She is based in Bristol at our Eastville and Shirehampton surgeries.

Jess has a Springer Spaniel called Bruce, and enjoys running, cooking, reading and watching films.

Julie qualified from Bristol Veterinary School in 1985, and has been a core member of our Longwell Green Veterinary Centre since 1992. She is really keen on all things feline, and runs our ‘Cat Clinics.’ She also loves anything complicated, such as cardiology, neurology and oncology!  She has an interest in gardening, including an allotment and likes keep fit and skiing.

Line joined Highcroft in February 2012 having qualified from Bristol University in 2006.  She is lead vet at Shirehampton Village Vets and has a special interest in surgery and imaging. Line is currently working towards her CertAVP in small animal surgery. When she's not working Line enjoys cycling, skiing and swimming. She has a lovely Norwegian forest cat called Roni.

Louisa qualified in 2006 at the Royal Veterinary College. Having previously worked in Winchester she joined Silva House in May 2008.
 
She has a special interest in cardiology and hopes to study for further qualifications in this field.

At home she has a cat called Jay and outside of work she enjoys running, swimming and going to the cinema.

Charlie joined Highcroft in August 2016 as an intern veterinary surgeon at our Highcroft Hospital in Whitchurch having qualified from University of Bristol in July 2016. He has a special interest in internal medicine and surgery, particularly emergency and critical care.

Outside interests include skiing, tennis, cinema and travelling. Charlie has a dog called Bruno who is a Cocker/Bichon Frise cross and two rescued moggies, Tiggy and Pebbles.

Rebecca is shares her time between our Whitchurch Hospital and Keynsham Veterinary Centre and holds a General Practitioner Certificate in Small Animal Medicine, which is also her area of special interest.

She has great energy and enthusiasm for her work and our clients love seeing her with their pets.  In her spare time Debbie like the great outdoors including an interest in gardening.

Melissa qualified from the Royal Veterinary College, London, in July 2016, and has joined Highcroft as an Intern Veterinary Surgeon at our Hospital in Whitchurch. Melissa has a special interest in emergency and critical care.

Melissa has two Cocker Spaniels and two Havana cats. She enjoys dog training (obedience and agility) walking and riding.

Rob joined Highcroft in January 2013 and works at Highcroft Veterinary Hospital and Surgery. Rob is one of our emergency night vets and looks after in-patients and emergency cases at the 24-hour hospital in Whitchurch. Rob is the proud father of twin baby girls.

Vet manager

Jenny is a Vet Manager at Highcroft Veterinary Hospital. She joined Highcroft in April 2014 having qualified as a vet from Bristol University in 2006.

Jenny completed her GP Certificate in Small Animal Medicine in 2012 and her GP Certificate in Veterinary Forensics and Law in 2015. She has authored a chapter in a textbook on Veterinary Forensics, published in April 2016.

Jenny is the proud owner of Roxy, a gorgeous black labrador, who you will often find sat behind the reception desk at our Ashton surgery. 

In her spare time, Jenny loves outdoor pursuits and has been white water kayaking all over the world (Nepal, New Zealand, Canada and all across Europe). She is a member, and sits on the committee of, the Avon Canoe Polo Club in Bristol, and regularly competes in both ladies and open competitions. Jenny also enjoys skiing, climbing, cycling and mountaineering.

Isabel qualified from Bristol Veterinary School in 1994 and joined Highcroft in 1998 and works at our Whitchurch and Brislington surgeries.

She has a special interest in Dermatology and runs regular clinics for pets with skin complaints. Isabel has a Post-graduate General Practitioner Certificate in Dermatology.

Jemma joined Highcroft in 2009 after qualifying from Bristol University in 2007. She completed her General Practioners Certificate in Exotic Animal Practice in 2011 and completed her Certificate of Advanced Veterinary Practice in Zoological Medicine in 2016 achieving Credits and Distinctions for many of the modules.

Jemma is one of our exotic vets who sees a variety of species from cats and dogs, to all the small furries, primates, fish, reptiles, birds, poultry and insects. She regularly presents lectures to clients, organisations and vets on exotics. She sees both first opinion and referral cases from all over the UK.

She is the veterinary advisor to Bristol City Council and is involved in veterinary inspections of Zoos and Dangerous Wild Animal Licence Applications.  Jemma is also an Official Veterinarian which means she can issue Pet Passports for dogs, cats and ferrets.

Marit has a special interest in Veterinary Ophthalmology and has devoted much of her post-graduate Continuing Professional Development training to this subject. She runs regular clinics for pets with eye complaints.

Outside of work Sarah likes to participate in running long distance events and triathlons and has a 4 year old domestic short haired cat called Bradley.

Sonya qualified from Bristol University in July 2013 and joined our exotic team in February 2015 and is currently working towards a Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice, (Cert AVP). She has a special interest in reptiles and runs North Somerset Reptile Rescue. She has a number of reptiles (as you might expect), a cat, dog and three horses! When not at Highcroft she enjoys training and riding her horses and walking and training her dog, a collie cross.

Lou graduated from Glasgow University in 1992. She worked in Lancashire, Cheshire and Oxford before joining Silva House in 1999. Her interests are small animal medicine and acupuncture, for which she is a member of the Association of British Veterinary Acupuncture. 

She has three cats called Elvis, McNulty and 'Herbert Higgins' (who answers to the name of ‘Chubby’). She enjoys baking, gardening and reading in her spare time.

Jade qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 2012 and joined Highcroft as an intern in 2013 based at our Whitchurch Hospital and surgery.  She is now a full time veterinary surgeon at Eastville Veterinary Centre. Jade originally studied human medicine and qualified as a doctor but changed to work with animals. She enjoys the daily benefits of cuddling patients and getting the odd sloppy kiss.  Jade has a Jack Russell called Finnegan and does agility at her local dog club.

Joe is a senior member of our Longwell Green Veterinary Centre team having joined the practice in 1994.

Joe has a very 'vetty' life. As a child he had every animal his parents would tolerate! He decided to be a vet at the age of ten, is married to another vet, and thoroughly loves his work!  He has a special interest in internal medicine especially cardiology and enjoys a variety of hobbies in his spare time such as reading, writing and poetry and more active pursuits such as running, swimming, sailing and kayaking!

Rachel has been part of Silva House since November 2010 and works as a Veterinary Surgeon at our Frome and Midsomer Norton veterinary centres. She qualified from Royal Veterinary College, London in 2007 and has a particular interest in ultrasound and feline medicine. Not surprisingly she has two cats, P.C. and Miggy, one domestic longhair and one shorthair.

When not at work Rachel is busy looking after her two sons but occasionally has time to make jewellery and play badminton.

Simon graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in July 2004. After working in Devon, Shropshire, Wiltshire and abroad, Simon joined Silva House in October 2012, initially to cover Rachel’s maternity leave (his wife). 

Simon has a particular interest in ophthalmology. 

Outside of work he is actively involved with Frome Baptist Church and enjoys running and photography.

Caroline joined Highcroft in August 2016 as an intern veterinary surgeon at our Highcroft Hospital and surgery in Whitchurch having qualified from the University of Edinburgh in July 2016.

She is interested in internal medicine, oncology, anaesthesia and pain management, emergency and critical care.

Caroline has two dogs, Tegan a 4 year old Sussex Spaniel and Cosmo a 2 year old mixed breed rescue from Cyprus. She enjoys running, knitting, baking playing piano and guitar.

Pete joined Highcroft in April 2016 as a surgeon at our busy Referral Centre in Whitchurch, Bristol. He qualified at the University of Queensland, Australia in 2002. Pete specialises in orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery and is also interested in fracture healing, trauma surgery and mechanobiology research.

Outside of the theatre, Pete is married with a young daughter and has a 14 year old cat called Buzz.

Dan joined Highcroft in July 2014 having graduated from Bristol University in 2004.  He spent a year working in a small animal practice in Kent before moving to the Unites States to do a three year small animal surgery residency. Following the residency he spent three years at Louisiana State University as an Assistant Professor of Surgery and head of the surgery Department. In 2012 he returned to the private practice the UK.

His particular interests are in oncologic and respiratory surgery and fracture repair and in his spare time enjoys cooking, gardening, photography and reading.

Kerry joined Highcroft in June 2016 and is our resident cat expert. She works as a specialist in our Referrals Centre at Highcroft Hospital in Whitchurch. She qualified from University of Edinburgh in 1998 and has an interest in infectious diseases.

Outside of work Kerry enjoys scuba and trimix diving and photography. Not surprisingly she has two domestic shorthair cats called Islay and Bonmore.

Specialist in Emergency and Critical Care

Helen is an American, European and RCVS Specialist in Emergency and Critical Care.  Helen joined Highcroft in 2012 to head our emergency and critical care referral service. She treats the sickest patients, who need intensive care to help them through their illnesses and enjoys the challenge of saving lives.

Helen has a particular interest in respiratory disease and mechanical ventilation, sepsis, haematologic diseases and toxicology.

Joe qualified from the Royal Veternary College London in 2002 and joined Highcroft in 2008.

In 2012 he gained the RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Surgery and also holds a certificate in hip replacement surgery. His interests include joint disease, arthroscopy and fracture repair.  Joe also does soft tissue surgery and is a key member of the Highcroft orthopaedic and soft tissue team.

Veterinary Ophthalmologist

Vim qualified from Bristol University in 2005 and hasn't left Bristol since! He worked at another large practice in Bristol for almost 5 years before joining Highcroft in January 2011.  Vim gained the RCVS Certificate in Ophthalmology in 2012 and runs first and second opinion eye clinics at our Whitchurch hospital and surgery.

He also has a strong interest in Exotic Species Medicine and runs first opinion clinics for exotic pets at our Whitchurch and Brislington surgeries. He is involved with many animal welfare charities in his native Sri Lanka and is also keen to contribute to the education of future generations of vets, both in the UK and in Sri Lanka. He is keen on educating and informing the public on animal health issues through the media.

Michelle qualified from Glasgow University in 1998.

Michelle has always worked in zoo and exotic animal practice and spent 7 years at Johannesburg Zoo in South Africa, before taking up her current position as Head of Veterinary Services at Bristol Zoo in October 2010. Michelle has a particular interest in avian and reptile medicine.

Jim Carter is our visiting ophthalmology (eye) specialist, the only Ophthalmology Diplomate in the South West.

Jim runs referral clinics at our Stockwood surgery on Mondays, where he sees pets that have been referred to him from veterinary surgeons all over the Bristol area, as well as our own. He is also a panellist for the BVA Eye Scheme which means that breeders can come to him for hereditary eye disease testing.

Consultant in Zoological Medicine

Rowena is a RCVS Diplomate in Zoological Medicine and therefore one of the most highly qualified veterinary surgeons in her field in Europe.

She runs referral clinics at our Whitchurch Hospital, with our exotic species team, Jemma Young MRCVS, Sonya Miles, BvSc MRCVS, Kati Heddington VN and Millie Gardener VN. Rowena holds the RCVS Diploma in Zoological Medicine and the MSc in Wild Animal Health and is currently working as the Staff Vet at Bristol Zoo Gardens, responsible for the care of over 350 species (mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and invertebrates).

Veterinary Dermatologist

Sarah is an Advanced Practitioner in Veterinary Dermatology and has been a Committee Member and Proceedings Editor of the BVDSG (British Veterinary Dermatology Study Group) for six years. 

She is a member of the ESVD (European Society of Veterinary Dermatology) and teaches the Dermatology Modules for the CVS New Graduate Training Programme. Sarah is an Allergy Vet Advisor for Axiom Veterinary Laboratories, which has been a hugely successful addition to Axiom's promotion of allergy testing in pets, immunotherapy and allergy management in the UK. She also provides an email and telephone advisory service to vets nationwide in relation to dermatology cases. 

Sarah is available to see dermatology cases at Highcroft Veterinary Referrals every Wednesday.
