The First Vaccinations

Puppies

Most puppies will now need to have 3 injections at 8, 10 and 12 weeks old. Your puppy will receive both a general vaccination and an L4 (Leptospirosis) vaccination at 8 weeks old. The second general vaccination will be given at 10 weeks old (so not to affect the age of socialisation). At 12 weeks old, your puppy will receive the second L4 vaccination and will be fully covered against Leptospirosis, which is prevalent in the areaWe also recommend Kennel Cough vaccination for puppies and dogs.

Kittens

Kittens require a course of two vaccinations at 9 and 12 weeks old, giving your pet immunity for the first year of life.  We recommend that you vaccinate your kitten against Feline Leukaemia when organising their initial vaccinations, although this is, of course, your choice.

The annual booster and health examination

Immunity to infectious diseases is not indefinite, and will gradually fall over time leaving your pet at risk. Regular annual booster vaccinations are needed to stimulate your pet's immunity, thereby minimising the risk when challenged by a natural infection. At the same time, we like to carry out a thorough health examination, and also look at other aspects of pet health care such as worming, flea control and diets. This is also an ideal time to ask any questions you may have regarding your pet's health.

If you would like any further information on vaccinations or the annual health examination, please do not hesitate to call your branch surgery or our advice line.
