Sammy the snorting Shih Tzu

Tuesday, July 29, 2014

It’s very common to hear short-nosed dogs snorting and snuffling now and again, but when Mr and Mrs Kennedy from Ashton were being kept awake throughout the night by their 4 year old Shih Tzu, Sammy, they thought it was definitely time to call the vet.

Sammy was brought in to see soft tissue surgeon, Juliet Pope at our referral centre, for an assessment of a suspected overlong soft palate (roof of the mouth). However after a thorough examination, Juliet discovered that Sammy couldn’t actually breathe through the right side of his nose.

Juliet suggested that he should have a CT scan to see what was causing this blockage and during his scan it was found that he had a fluid-filled mass within his nose. Juliet carried out a biopsy on the mass and discovered it was a rare cyst that was related to the eruption of abnormal baby teeth.

To help Sammy breathe normally, the next step was surgery. Juliet attempted to drain the cyst to make it smaller but unfortunately this didn’t work. Therefore, poor Sammy needed a major procedure to remove a part of his top jaw so that the entire cyst could be removed.

Sammy had the successful surgery soon after and he recovered extremely well. “Sammy was an absolute angel throughout the entire process” said Juliet, “he’s such a cheerful little dog and was very accepting of his treatment”. Sammy is happily home with Mr and Mrs Kennedy, who should now be getting a more peaceful night’s sleep!
