Tour de Highcroft bike ride

Eight ambitious team members cycled the 60 mile distance between each of Highcroft's 12 surgeries in aid of Hounds for Heroes on Saturday 24th September.

The ‘Tour de Highcroft’ charity cycle ride took over seven hours, starting from Shirehampton Village Vets in North West Bristol to Frome Veterinary Centre in Somerset. Not only was the journey 60 miles long, the hills and valleys of Bristol and Bath meant they climbed a cumulative total of over 2,000 feet.

Veterinary surgeon, Christian Donswijk explains: “We’re always looking for new ways to raise money for charity, so when our ambulance driver, Jeff Adams, suggested the ‘Tour de Highcroft’ we jumped at the chance. With Highcroft Veterinary Group now being a large group with 12 branches across the region, our route was ready made, albeit a rather challenging one!

“Hounds for Heroes is a charity we feel very close to as a practice, having met the founder of the charity and hearing his incredible story. So far we have raised over £400 and our donation page is still open for gifts.”

Hounds for Heroes provide specially trained assistance dogs to injured and disabled men and women of both the UK Armed Forces and Emergency Services. The charity was set up by war veteran, Allen Parton, after an assistance dog changed his life forever.

Christian continues: “A special mention must also go to fellow veterinary surgeon, Fiona Lawrence, who cycled the hardest part of the journey only four months in to her maternity leave - without any training!”

The team enjoyed the experience so much that they are planning to make this an annual event!
